Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin, High Cliff State Park offers an escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Among its many treasures at High Cliff State Park Trails lies the Butterfly Pond Trail, a beautiful haven for exploration and photography.
If you’re not familiar, High Cliff State Park, located on the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago, is a gem that showcases the natural splendor of Wisconsin. The park spans over 1,100 acres, encompassing a diverse range of habitats, from limestone cliffs to deep forests and wetlands. It is a haven for wildlife and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s also one of my top recommended spots for a photography session for obvious reasons. Photographer tip – if you’re looking to shoot at High Cliff, make sure to fill out a photography permit and pay the fee beforehand!
One of the most captivating trails within High Cliff State Park is the Butterfly Pond Trail. This picturesque path stretches for approximately 1.7 miles, guiding visitors through a tranquil journey of natural beauty. As you embark on this trail, be prepared to witness an array of vibrant butterflies fluttering among the wildflowers, captivating your senses.
In the summertime, there are beautiful trees, flowers, and tall grass to shoot in. There are also rocks at the start of the trail that make a great spot to stop for photos. One of my favorite features of the Butterfly Pond Trail is the pond that you overlook. Many people enjoy fishing and sitting to slow down and enjoy the water. It’s also stunning in fall when the leaves change color.
During a recent family photography session, we adventured on the High Cliff State Park Trails to capture this beautiful family interacting and enjoying nature. This was the second time I had the honor of working with this gorgeous family. Their little one was down for exploring with Mom and Dad on the rocks, watching deer pass through the field, and looking for fish in the pond. He picked grass for Mom and loved waving to every person we saw on the trail. It was such a pleasure to document these small moments for this family.
The next time you find yourself wanting to adventure on the High Cliff State Park trails, make sure to check out Butterfly Pond Trail. It’s located at the beginning of the state park and has a small parking lot to park in. Note that bikes and pets are not allowed on the trail, but it’s truly a gem!
