Last fall, I joined the Trusedale family at Fritse Park in Neenah, WI for a fall sunset family session. One thing I did not anticipate was that the weather would be really warm. It was an early November weekend night and unusually warm for this time of year in WI. The park was filled with people and cars since it was so nice out! You would never know it based on the photos because I hid a lot of the cars and the people, but it was a really busy night at the park. If you’re looking for a Neenah family photographer, keep reading to learn more about their beautiful sunset session!
The best part about doing a fall session in November is that the sun sets a lot earlier so it’s great for families with little kids. You can get the nice glow of the sunset without having to keep young kids up really late at night. The Trusedales had a lot of fun doing lots of different play-based activities. Some of the prompts I like to use include throwing kids up in the air, walking, snuggling with Mom and Dad, snuggling with each other and lots of tickles.
Family sessions should have movement and show the love and the joy that a family has for one another. I can’t capture that when everyone is just staring at the camera. That’s why I do posed photos, which I like to call the grandma shot, BUT I also do a lot of candid moments of the family. After a session, these are usually the photos that they love the most and that I love the most too. Most families find that it’s easy to get someone to take a picture of them all looking at the camera, but capturing a family interacting is not as common. Aren’t those the photos that you love the most though? Mom and child hugging. Dad giving baby a kiss. Those are the moments that mean the most and that I want to remember as a mom.
I had such a great time meeting this family at the park for their fall session. I loved the sunset that we had that night. It was so beautiful. Being able to capture this family together reminds me of why I do family photography. It’s these moments in life that we remember what’s most important – being together.
